- Opis
- Cliff diving at its purest – the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series returns to the root-covered sinkhole close to the archaeological site of Chichen Itza in Mexico in April 2011. Cenote Ik Kil is a natural formation, which has assumed an almost mythic dimension. It was attributed sacred powers and, at 60m wide and 39m deep, it is certainly awe-inspiring. Its height of 26.5m is suited perfectly for high diving competition. Located in the northern Yucatán Peninsula, the well of sacrifice is just 10 minutes’ north of Chichen Itza – a UNESCO World Heritage site and a place recently listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World! The great Mayan city was built around a cluster of these natural wells, including the one known as the Sacred Blue Cenote, to which it is connected by a 300-metre ‘sacbe’, or raised and paved pathway. Pre-Columbian Maya sacrificed objects and human beings into the cenote as a form of worship to the Maya rain god Chaac. The pristine water is teeming with small catfish and was host to many religious ceremonies during the equinox. The high diving elite are excited at returning to this truly stunning setting deep in the heart of the Yucatán jungle, where World Series winner Gary Hunt (GBR) took his second victory in season II.
